Well it’s officially Autumn today, but I’m holding on to hope that we’ll have an Indian summer this September that will make up for the wash out that was August! What a disappointing end to the summer, although yesterday we had amazing weather here, blisteringly sunny and warm. I wish I wasn’t currently curled up on the couch suffering with a sore throat and fluey symptoms so that I could’ve enjoyed it more. But hopefully we’ll have more of the same weather this September before Autumn really takes hold. Anyway on to the task at hand…
This homemade body scrub is the perfect way to exfoliate and moisturise your skin, especially if it tends to be dry, or if it just needs a bit of TLC when the seasons change and your skin takes the brunt. The sugar acts as an abrasive, gently sloughing off the dead skin cells, while the coconut oil is soothing on sensitive skins and super moisturising and nourishing at the same time.
Adding a gentle essential oil like lavender gives it a lovely scent but is also great for your skin too, acting as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. If you’ve never used lavender essential oil on your skin before, do a little patch test on the inside of your elbow, keep it out of the sun and give it 24 hours before applying anywhere else. Lavender is the most gentle essential oil but you can react to anything so be careful.
This scrub is ridiculously easy to make, very cheap in comparison to a fancy brand and 100% natural. You’ll save money on expensive shop-bought versions and you can rest easy in the knowledge that you’re only applying super safe, 100% natural ingredients to your skin, which is after all, the biggest organ in our bodies. Apply it to dry skin and massage in small circles, before rinsing under the shower with warm water.
To the recipe!!
All you will need is the following:
– 1 heaped 1/4 cup of RAW, Organic, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (emphasis on the raw, you want it as unrefined as possible)
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar, I used golden caster sugar because that’s what I had in my kitchen, but any granulated sugar will do
– Lavender Essential Oil, make sure it’s a really pure essential oil, not synthetic or a blend
You will also need a bowl or tub to mix it in. I used an old yogurt tub that I’d washed out, because it comes with a lid so is perfect for storing the scrub in.
And a spatula or spoon for mixing.
To make it you just combine all three ingredients in the bowl or tub and cream them as if you were creaming butter and sugar for a cake!
For best results massage into dry skin first, buffing in circular motions to gently exfoliate the skin and stimulate circulation.
It will begin to melt when it hits your skin, turning into a liquid oil. Massage it in as you would any scrub, in circular motions.
Once it’s all worked in then rinse off in the shower.
This body scrub will last for months in the tub, as long as it’s airtight and stored in a cool dry place. You will want to use it a few times a month to buff up your skin to baby soft conditions!
For extra moisturising power, don’t wash with soap or anything foamy afterwards, and you’ll be left with a sheer layer of coconut oil that will keep on working to soften and soothe your skin for hours after your treatment. Use this scrub a day or two before you apply fake tan (not immediately before as your skin will be too moisturised) or before getting your legs out for a special occasion! Believe me this scrub is such a wonderful treatment. I suffer with very dry and sensitive skin at times and this stuff always saves the day, gently exfoliating without irritating, and the coconut oil soothes even the most sensitive of skins. You will be delighted with the results.
