Last Friday, I suddenly decided to nip down to Blackrock for a late lunch at Fish Shop, which is tucked away at the back of Blackrock Market.
I dragged Mr. Cooksalot along, because he loves fish and chips and the last time he chose a chipper, we had what I can only describe as the worst fish and chips ever. To wipe that unfortunate event from our minds, we ventured through Blackrock Market, which was virtually deserted, up to the back behind the Halal Shop. There we found a very picturesque, quaint little shack that wouldn’t be out of place in St. Ives or anywhere else in Cornwall.
It was very quiet, but the sun was out and the menu was very enticing!
I had read all about how fresh and delicious their food was, so was dying to try them out. As it happened, it was their first birthday that Friday.
I went for the fish burger, a generous piece of juicy, flaky hake in a crispy golden batter, served in a proper Arun bakery brioche bun with baby gem, garlic mayo, and a very fresh and light slaw made with fennel, apple and red cabbage. It was superb!
The whole thing was exceptionally tasty, light and full of flavour. Washed down with a lemon San Pellegrino I was in food heaven.
Mr. Cooksalot had the battered haddock and chips, and it was equally light, fresh and delicious, although I do think mine was the star of the show. I was glad I hadn’t ordered chips as I really didn’t need them with the bap. That didn’t stop me stealing some from Mr. Cooksalot’s plate though, but nothing new there! That’s the price he pays for eating out with me…
If you love really great quality fish and chips, get down to Fish Shop and try it out for yourself. The food was perfect and it was good value for money. Our meal cost us €17.50 including 2 drinks. It’s all outdoor seating, and we were lucky with the weather as it was a gloriously sunny day. Afterwards we popped over to the Organic Supermarket to stock up on various supplies, and then treated ourselves to some very good coffee from Bear Market Coffee. I also got some chocolate cashews which were better than I imagined! Now all I need to do is convince Fish Shop to open another branch in Sandymount…
